id431-English Schools selections, and report from Gateshead

Written by DB

Congratulations to those members who have achieved selection for this major Schools event - two are old hands and three are there for the first time. Surrey had more qualified athletes than the 60 places allocated and we offer commiserations to those who just missed out this year - the selectors apparently spent over 6 hours deliberating the last 10 places. The same was the case in Middlesex where some of our members go to school - at least one so qualified is on the reserve list.

K&P's 5 athletes were all in action on the Friday, with very mixed fortunes.

Dominique Blaize led the Senior Girls Long Jump at 5m90 until the last round, only to be pipped for Gold by Gemma Weetman with a last gasp 6m.07; she later won another silver with the Surrey 4 x 100 relay team.

In the Senior Girls 400m,Sarah Harris ran 3rd in her heat in 58.85,but found herself an agonising 9th fastest, thus missing the final by the narrowest of margins.

Gordon Lester(Junior Boys PV) was not quite at his best and would have been most disappointed to clear 2m.85,which gave him 10th place.

At Junior Girls level,Lucy Jones ran a nippy 12.26 but found that good enough only for 6th in her heat and did not make the final.

However, perhaps the most disappointed will be Mary Iheke, who easily qualified for the Inter Girls 300m final, only to be disqualified for a reason not yet clear to your correspondent, but most probably for a lane violation.
