id437-Athletics Weekly Letter of the Week June 29th 2006

Written by Athletics Weekly

AW's choice of Letter of the Week(June 29th edition) will be of more than passing interest to any former Polytechnic Harrier,as will the article about Jim Hogan in the June 15th AW referred to by the writer,John Berry. By kind permission of Jason Henderson,AW's Editor, the letter is reproduced in full here.

It was with fond memories that I read the article about Jim Hogan in the June 15th edition of AW. Although I did most of my Sunday running from Lauriston Cottage on Wimbledon Common,I would every so often meet Jim and John MacNamara, both fellow Polytechnic Harriers, and we would run from Chiswick to Lauriston Cottage to meet the group of athletes running from there. The standard was very high with the likes of Gerry & Geoff North, the Holt twins Dave & Bob,John Bicourt, together with others who had represented the AAAs.

Many of the London clubs would be represented and, although there was fierce rivalry, there was very rarely any acrimony, just good-natured leg-pulling. They were probably the most enjoyable 20-22 miles that any runner could wish for.

It is a shame that the standard of distance running in this country among the men has dropped so dramatically; perhaps they need a Jim Hogan to inspire them as he did in the Poly all those years ago.

Anyway,it was nice to hear that Jim is still going strong and I would like to take this opportunity through AW to wish him all the best for the future.

John Berry

(Ed's note - Gerry North seen at Bracknell on July 8th,still team managing for City of Portsmouth's SML squad).
