id441-Stan Jones 26.12.14 - 18.5.06

The Club is very sad to have to report the death of Polytechnic Harriers' 1948 Olympic Marathon competitor,Stan Jones,at the age of 91.

One of seven members of Polytechnic Harriers selected for the London Olympics,Stan Jones was a regular competitor in Poly teams for many years,on road and country, frequently contesting the classic races such as the Finchley 20,and,indeed,a consistent supporter for many more years after his retirement from the active side of the sport. He was elected a Life Member of the Club in 1962,was club marathon champion 7 times, the last time in 1962 at the age of 47(3h.01.48) and was a great advocate of sport in general.

Stan's best time for the marathon of 2h.40.49 was achieved in 1948 and it ensured he was selected for that year's Olympic celebration in London, though he was somewhat slower in the actual race, finishing 30th outside 3 hours.

Resident in Cookham,Berks,Stan, and his wife,Georgina were very active in the village until fairly recently when both had to move into a nursing home in nearby Maidenhead. Stan was a Parish Councillor until 2001 and Georgina was active member of the local Labour party.

Sadly,Georgina passed away in the home on May 5th this year and, within two weeks,Stan also succumbed in Heatherwood Hospital,Ascot.
