All the month's news

On the 2nd,as part of his prep.for the Bristol Half Marathon and the Cardiff Marathon,Ross Shaddick placed 8th in Plymouth's Saltram 5k in 16.52. Earlier in the day,Marc Trevisan 21.14,Mike May 26.12,both first-timers, and Maurice Joyce 31.18(PB by 5secs),completed the weekly Bushy Park race. Erstwhile member,Senan Doohan completed his first BPTT in 20.18. On the Sunday,Nicky Atkins ran for charity(funding for a Scanner for Kingston Hospital) in the very undulating and windy Kent Coastal Half-Marathon(1h.48).

Several were at the Woking YA Meet(3rd) - best performance was probably William Trimble's nearly 4m improvement in the Javelin(47.46 new Club record) for 2nd; Gordon Lester(3rd) confirmed his recent PV advances(3m.10);Natalie Ellis took 3rd in the U15G Discus(20.27);Adam Wicks was over 5m in the LJ for the first time(7th 5m.07);both Jake Budd & Chris Hall were well up to form over 100/200;Victoria Douglas ran a nippy 13.46 70H(8th F);Ollie Garner was just a few 100ths outside his best 800;and David Fitzpatrick ran a good first 200 of the summer.

At the IPC World Championships in Assen,David Weir(T54) continued in his superlative 2006 form, winning Gold in 100,400 & 1500 with a silver at 200 to complete a busy and successful week(4th-9th).

At the BAL Qualifier at Abingdon, there were no fairy tales as the 2 relegated Nat Three Clubs rather easily re-qualified for 2007. So we shall be up against the same clubs as this summer, with the exception of Crawley & Stoke replacing the promoted Gateshead & Derby. Matches will certainly be Midlands/South-based,though there may well be a move to regionalise the 2 lower divisions.

Only one taker in the 9th's BPTT - Maurice Joyce hacked 89 secs off his best with 29.49.

The self-same MJ would also have been delighted that his Pole Vault protege,Gordon Lester, competing in the St Mary's Richmond Open at Twickenham on Sunday 10th,moved to 4th on this year's UK U15 Boys' rankings with an excellent PB of 3m35. On a less exalted level, this puts him 2nd on this season's K&P Open list, too!! Also present at Twickers were Mike May(Vet PB 100 13.1),Draco Mkpa,Marc Trevisan(season's best at 800) & Roger Bartlett(M65 SP 10.00) - actual results hard to get hold of,as usual!

Elsewhere on 9th/10th,we passed on the County Road Relays &,seemingly, the County Multis, but the annual pilgrimage from Virginia Water to Ham(The Stragglers River Relay) saw an identical K&P team to last year of Nicky Atkins,Nicki Murphy,Bob McDonough,Mike Maranzano,Graeme Horstead & Andy Arbour finish 13th of 40 teams, a few places down from 2005. Results can be found at -

At the BPTT on 16th,3 of the 4 K&P runners ran their fastest on the course - Ron Taylor 12th 17.14(best by 14secs);Simon Croall 79th 21.57;Mike May 116th 24.16(best by 1m.56secs);and Maurice Joyce 168th 29.32(best by 17secs).The previous week James Williams ran Unattached into 50th(20.43) and it is confirmed that this was our U15 member.

On 17th,Ross Shaddick ran what he considers his best ever race anywhere, taking 30th in the Bristol Half Marathon in 74.08.

Ron Taylor raced to an excellent 3rd in the BPTT in 17.18,just 4 secs shy of his best;Owen Lewis, eyeing the Club 5m CC next week(on orders!) was 61st in 21.12 in his first-ever outing;whilst Mike May(119th 24.02) & Maurice Joyce(172nd 28.33) both improved, the latter by almost a minute(do not be surprised as MJ has run marathons ealier in his active career).

The month closed with a further BPTT - U15 James Williams ran into 49th(21.10) with Maurice J. improving yet again in 128th with 28.17,16secs better.
