id468-SWL D2 M6 Kingston September 2nd 2006 Report

Written by DB

Michele Wicks' squad duly confirmed their Div two status for 2007 with a comfortable 186 pts to take 2nd in the final match, leaving them 16th in the final table with 922 pts overall for the summer. Scores : Newquay & Par 194/K&P 186/ESM 152/SLH 139/Ipswich 117.

Whilst it WAS a home match, there was an improved turnout, not least in the U15 group where Maddy Garner & Natalie Ellis, the most loyal and committed members along with Rahannah GV,led the way with Natalie taking 2nd in her speciality Discus(20.59) and Maddy winning her first 5 pointer at this league(B800). Stephanie Espinosa again showed promise over 800(2A) and newest member,Emily MacIlwain, likewise in the High Jump(1.40). Of the Under 13s,the ever-committed Lucy Clacher was joined for the first time by Victoria Douglas(LJ/75H) and Eleanor van Klaveren(JT plus) and these 3 will hopefully be bright sparks next year, should this group remain in the league set-up.

Last year's Class of U15s completed their first U17 season with the same mixture of aplomb and enjoyment - Roseanne Mackay was the only SWL performer at all 6 matches and, with Harriet Lester & Mary Iheke, continued to make a substantial impression in the seniors. They were joined in this last match for the first time by Emily Kneebone, who was not to be outdone and duly won the B LJ.

With Dominique Blaize,Sasha Gordon & Chyna Vincent(risking life and limb in the Vault) from the vital Under 20 group the only contributors this summer,it was heartening to welcome Isabelle Hatton & Sarah Atkins back into the squad, and they duly obliged with B wins in the Javelin(23m60) & 400(67.1).With DB sidelined,it was also good to have Sasha coming through her long-standing struggle with a steady Triple and a 24.80 Javelin.

With Liz Patrick getting used to being Mrs Davidson and Barbara Mueller still not match-fit, of the pure Seniors,it was yet again the Burbridge clan who competed out of their cotton socks - Rachel winning both A400&800 and Debbie taking the the B 100H(amongst other efforts). Of the Vets,Camilla, ably assisted by Isabelle H and Madame President, mopped up(almost),including a 39.36 Hammer within a metre of her PB/CR,whilst a returning Rachel Disley & Alison Jones coped well as usual with the 1500/3000 double.

Michele Wicks again deserves our considerable thanks for shouldering the travails of the SWL - as do Debbie,Camilla & Clare who have played their managerial part, too.
