id517-Surrey Mens CC League D2 M3 West End Common,Esher January 13th 2007 Report

Written by DB

The men were again left somewhat wanting at West End Common in this 3rd round match held on an alternately waterlogged and then firm surface.

After Under 13s Alistair Woods(13th) & Ollie Garner(15th) had brought back unfavourable reports of the conditions, our leading 5 seniors again produced the goods - Mike Maranzano(9th),Andy Arbour(12th),Mark Reed(26th),Ron Taylor(27th) & newcomer David Henley(29th) - but we were scuppered in the team stakes by the vast chasm between our top half dozen or so and the rest. Whereas we rose to Div One on the backs of a nap hand of Under 20s,these have found it hard to make themselves available, and we now are struggling, along with Walton who accompanied us up the divs,to keep out of the relegation places.

A gap of 47 places(out of 90 scorers) followed until the much improved Matt Hyett(91st) led in the remaining team runners(all vets) - Ant Budarkiewicz(102nd),Simon Croall(105th),Bob McDonough(112th) & Graham Huntley(113th). A team score of 509pts and 8th on the day(of 9) leaves us gasping for breath in 7th overall - 168 ahead of Walton in 8th - going into the final match on February 10th on glorious Epsom Downs, after which 2 will be relegated to Div 3 - dont let it be us,guys.

Three further vets completed our contingent - David Greenfield(116th),Geoff Reed(133rd) & David Barrington(136th) - 143 finished.
