A near-full-strength Mens team took a leaf out of the Ladies squad, turning out in numbers to dismiss all fears of relegation.
Passing on the absence of any youngsters in the early race, our Seniors/Vets got substantially to grips with the situation confronting them and produced by far our best result of a disappointing campaign overall.
Led by Mussabini Trophy winner,Jamie McCullagh in 7th,we succeeded in closing 7 in 35 which is much more like the K&P of recent League contests. Mark Reed, off to the Tokyo Marathon next Sunday with wife Catherine and Steve Wright who is teaching in Osaka, showed much better form ahead of that formidable test, finished in 9th,followed closely by Andy Arbour 12th & Mike Maranzano 15th. Aussie David Henley took a useful 23rd,ahead of Ross Shaddick 34th & Ron Taylor 35th. Thereafter, things slipped into the former gear but Ant Budarkiewicz was much improved on M3 in 59th and Matt Hyett 99th & Simon Croall 108th completed our 10. The Over 50s(and the rest!) Nap Hand followed. Interestingly, sandwiched between Jamie & Mark,in 8th,was E&E's U20 Tom Hinds, who has signed as an HCA for K&P this coming track season.
Teamwise,we were 3rd on the day, with a total which if it had been mirrored in the 3 earlier races would have seen us back in Div One next year!! Overall,we pulled up to 6th and will contest Div Two again in 2007/8 - but,a word of warning - after lauding ourselves last year with 5 useful middle-order Under 20s,this year all but one,the mighty Ron, dissipated to university or inactivity and we were left with a 15-man team in this last fixture of whom ONLY FIVE were Under 30 and one or two of them only by the skin of their teeth! How frail and fragile are our squads! We did have 4 potentially active supporters but all of them have seen better CC days, too!
Well done, though, all - not least TM Bob who sensibly sidelined himself.
