id556-BAL Nat 3 M1 Stoke 5th May 2007 Report

Written by DB

The BAL team made their best-ever start to a campaign since returning to this level in 2003,taking a fine 2nd place in the opening match at Stoke behind clear winners,Basingstoke & Mid Hants.

The team made an early bid for glory in the field and on the track, with new team captain Gareth Cook & Kyle Stevens annexing 2nd places in the Hammer, and HCAs Toby Ulm & Dave Taylor outclassing their 400 hurdles opposition. The former's 52.2 made new Divisional Secretary,Mike May's Man of the Match selection extremely easy.

On a fine warm day in the Potteries, especially heartening was the excellent support from the travelling entourage - Families Field,Hatton,Waddington,Hall,Lester etc;the willingness of team members to travel from all corners(Swindon,Plymouth,Cambridge,Oxford,Sheffield,as well as The Smoke);and the early season form of the team clearly indicating good winters/sensible management of resources/judicious training etc.

The full results can now be found via the Main Menu, but well worth a mention were PBs for Ron Taylor(2.00.8 AND 4.12.2) & Matt Field(15.9);debuts for Maris Kuklis(1.85) & Gordon Lester(3.60);good form from home-grown jumpers Humphrey Waddington & Chris Hall;yet another successful treble (400/800/4x400) from almost evergreen Jamie McCullagh;and not forgeting the throwers cartel of Messrs Cook/Dack/Stevens/ Hatton(though missing an injured Nick Owen this time for once).Indeed, everyone! How easy-peasy can team selection be!

And so to Southampton on June 2 - offers, please.
