Richard Jones, who has died aged 86,was an inveterate supporter and official of the Polytechnic Harriers, and will be more than sadly missed by those who still knew him.
After an active career, mostly over the country,Richard took on the Secretaryship of the Club for 2 years from 1959-1961 before moving to be Hon Treasurer from 1961-1969,a post in keeping with his professional calling of accountant. He was one of those many people who was always willing to help out wherever needed and one who always conducted himself in a manner befitting a perfect gentleman. He was elected a Vice-President in 1962.
After the merger of Poly with RBKAC in 1985,he still maintained contact with, and interest in, the new Club, primarily via his membership of our monthly 100 Club and by his annual donations.
Richard was active to the very last. Always a prolific traveller, even after the death of his wife,Muriel,he continued to play volleyball and badminton, and to swim and do aerobics, with enormous enthusiasm. He was taken ill on May 16th and died in Beaconsfield of pneumonia two days later and, most sadly, news of his demise did not reach the Club until late on the day of his funeral - his sister-in-law said the church was full, but unfortunately, probably not including anyone from the Club.
