id570-BAL Nat 3 M2 Southampton 2nd June 2007 Report

Written by DB

A fine PB SP from 22nd birthday-boy Kyle Stevens(15.86 1A),which takes him to 13th on this year's UK Rankings,A&B string TJ successes for James Heptonstall(13.55) & Humphrey Waddington(13.45) and PBs for James Moroney(800 1.57.1) & HCA Tom HInds(1500 4.09.4) could not offset an unfortunate series of on-the-day injuries/illness(NINE enforced changes DURING the meeting);and the BAL team slipped to 6th at Southampton Sports Centre,though still holding 3rd overall at the halfway stage.

An incident on the M27 delayed the start of the meeting but the sunny & warm conditions seemed condusive and we got a customary good start with seconds in the HT,with Gareth Cook hitting 56.51 & Kyle Stevens 49.55;there were similar points in the LJ,Chris Hall pipping James Heptonstall(6.55 to 6.53) and,as the afternoon progressed,it was the field events which kept us afloat.James Heptonstall and Humphrey Waddington were point-perfect at TJ and Chris Dack was busy and successful.

On the track,however,though the PBs mentioned above,were,indeed,welcome,we rarely reflected the good conditions. Injuries and illness sustained before the match inhibited several members of the team;though they gave it their commitment,common sense prevailed and further serious damage,hopefully,has been averted.

Further evidence of commitment was shown by the willingness of our veterans,with both M60 Geoff Reed(Steeple) & M55 Les Hatton(Javelin) making their first appearances in a BAL match.

We have dropped out of a promotion position but are still well-placed,as long as we can come back strongly at Abingdon & Derby. Results from Nat Two suggest that,if we stay in this division,we shall have a trip to Edinburgh to look forward to in 2008! A suitable incentive,one would have thought,to gain promotion.

Match result - 1 Basingstoke 383::2 Southampton 328::3 Crawley 290::4 Medway 283::5 Notts 267::6 K&P 250.5::7 Stoke 194.5::8 Rugby 191 and overall it is Basingstoke 16(757),Crawley 12(572),K&P 10(554),Southampton 9(582.5),Medway 9(551),Notts 9(540),Stoke 5(451.5) & Rugby 2(365).
