id609-BAL Nat 3 M4 Derby August 4th 2007 Report

Written by DB

Despite enormous commitment and invigorating performances, the team fell short of promotion.

Full results are available on both the Notts AC site -www.nottsac.co.uk & on the BAL site - www.bal.org.uk

Final Match Score - Notts 382/BMH 362/K&P 318/M&M 294/TS 254/Crawley 249/R&N 168/CoS 131 and the final league table - 1 BMH 29&1424;2 Notts 25&1266;3 K&P 23&1199;4 Crawley 20&1093/5 Medway 18&1112;6 Team S'ton 15&1070.5;7 Stoke 9&844.5;8 Rugby 5&703.

Well,it was special,it was exceptional,it was bewildering,it was disappointing,it was……..BAL!

The squad were moved to produce 3 Club Records, several PBs and a swathe of 2007 bests. You cannot ask more.

As happens at the final matches in a season, the team scores become polarised - the bottom teams tend to give up the ghost a little, with the result that the leading teams take the major spoils but dont necessarily put that much distance between themselves in each event. We won 4 doubles whilst Notts AC,our chief rivals, took 5,with Basingstoke getting 2 - the big difference, though, which refutes the above argument!,was that both those clubs were right behind us in our top events, but we found great difficulty hanging onto their coattails in their strong events. Hence the final denouement!

We finished 3rd on the day and 3rd overall, our best-ever in this BAL life - and it's Edinburgh for our holidays in 2008!

100 - SB for David Cook(3A 11.14);insufficient time reward for a fine run by Andre Nembhard(2B 11.22).

200 - Club U20 records/PBs for both Chris Hall(4A) AND David Cook(3B) in the identical time(22.31).

400 - SB for Adam Bellis(5A 50.26) and 4th for a busy Maris Kuklis.

800 - Thrown in at the deep end,both Ron Taylor(2.01.83) & Tom Hinds(2.02.18) found the last 100 a test.

1500 - Ron & Tom ran their hearts out,but the double with 800 was a mite unfair.

5000 - SB for Mark Reed(6A 16.22.69) and another gutsy run from Ross Shaddick(4B 16.55.28 after over 4 hours driving).

110H - Deputising,Chris Hall(5A) & Maris Kuklis(4B) did us proud.

400H - A PB by miles for Maris Kuklis(56.02) as he stormed through to 2nd,whilst evergreen 49yo HCA,Howard Moscrop(58.35),imperiously held off all but the winner in the B.

3000Steeple - SBs for both BAL-ever-present Andy Arbour(10.14.76) & Mike Maranzano(10.21.22).

4 x 100 - Our best quartet(Hall,CookD,Heptonstall,Nembhard) were just shaded from 3rd by 1/100th(5th 43.52).

4 x 400 - Tired legs rather found us out - BAL debut for Jason Bernard.

HJ - Just off the pace with Prath Kaneri(6A 1.75) and Chris Dack(4=B).

PV - Gallant performance from Maurice Joyce(5A);Gordon Lester will survive the vaulter's nightmare!.

LJ - The first of our doubles, with David Cook, who dismissed his 5-event/48-point stint with equanimity, taking the A(6.91 - his best in a K&P vest) and James Heptonstall the B(6.70).

TJ - Same doublers as LJ - James(13.16) & David(13.15 SB) did the business.

SP - SB for Nick Owen(1A 15.15) turning the tables on Kyle Stevens(14.89) for our 3rd double win.

DT - SBs for Nick Owen(2A 43.82 - not far off his best-ever,having previously only picked up a 1k implement this summer!) and for Felix Hatton(3B 41.63).

HT - Kyle Stevens posted a SB 50.81 and led Gareth Cook until late on(51.97) - both 2nd.

JT - Piece de resistance from Felix Hatton with a PB/Club Record/Surrey Record/hike 2 places up to 9th in the Power of Ten etc(68.80),not to mention a 2nd Man of the Match
