The Club has lost another of its long-time stalwarts and patrons with the recent passing of Vice-President Ken Yates at the Ersham House Nursing Home in Hailsham,Sussex.
Ken was a fine gentleman of the old school and had been a member of Polytechnic Harriers since before WW2;initially he was a competitior, more preferably in his favourite discipline of Cross Country, but then moved on in later years to become the doyen of preparing our courses in Richmond Park.Firstly for Poly but then he embraced the merged KACPH equally as keenly. One cannot recall his missing any home fixture and he travelled widely, too, with Poly teams in his earlier days. Members from both clubs will surely recall his cheery encouragement and his selfless work-ethic with the flags and the marshalling of the courses.
Ken worked for the Eagle Star Insurance for most of his working life and it was only some years after his final retirement that he moved to live in Polegate in Sussex. Some 4 years ago, living alone became a strain and, after spending an occasional few weeks in care,he moved permanently into the Nursing Home, where he was extremely happy and content. Several friends from the Poly & KACPH had visited him in recent times including Ant Budarkiewicz and Bill Haigh, and your Gen. Sec and his wife spent an enjoyable afternoon in his company there some weeks ago. He was his usual chatty and friendly self, but in early September he had a short spell in hospital. Returning to the Home,he seemed to have improved considerably but, sadly,he slipped away quietly on September 25th at the fine old age of 93.
His funeral takes place at Eastbourne Crematorium on October 5th at 1.30pm.
