Fine weather greeted the opening of the 2007/8 season in Richmond Park.
With 6 of the 9 teams almost solely running clubs who do not really cater for youngsters, there was a very poor turnout of 11 in the YA race, whilst the Senior event featured some 140 finishers,of whom some 80 were veterans.
George Corcoran was our prime finisher in the YA race, taking 3rd U15/U17,with Ed Croall 5th. In the U13 section,Martin Purkiss,by some way the youngest, was our sole rep in 4th.
With numerous absentees, things looked bleak for Bob McDonough's hosting team, and it was only by the skin of our teeth that we managed a clear 10 starters. Again,we reflected the trend with only one runner under 30 in our squad;however,Mark Reed, likely to be,at best, commuting to Germany regularly this winter, pushed on well to finish 6th.Andy Arbour was a fine 9th,Mike Maranzano 19th,Ant Budarkiewicz(M45) 42nd and a rapidly-improving Matt Hyett 47th(2m30s faster than this time last year),but that was where the halo slipped;the remaining scorers were towards the rear end. Jamie McCullagh started but has been nursing a very sore achilles for a couple of months and one tentative gentle lap was quite sufficient as part of his recovery.
Teamwise,we were still better than West4 and Sutton Runners, but we remain substantially lacking in depth and our leading scorers are getting no younger. We are rueing the complete disappearance of 6 U20s who graced our squad two years ago!
