id758-Casualties - Updated 31st July

Written by DB

We are much saddened to have to report on the likely long-duration absences from Club activites of John Simmons & Felix Hatton. Also,'in the wars',is Surrey County President,Don Webb(Croydon),who is in hospital, initially in Kingston but now in Farnborough,Kent, after falling and breaking a hip, whilst officiating at Kingsmeadow at the Inter County Schools match on June 14th.

Leading coach, veteran competitor & Lily B TM,John was rushed to hospital on Friday,June 20th and is still in St Georges,Tooting where he will remain whilst undergoing tests and commencing the road to recovery.(Update)John has now thankfully returned home, but will be taking a back seat for some time.Frank S & Susanne D have kindly agreed to look after the Lily B,and Maurice J & Gillian L are ensuring cover for John's Training Group.

Top Ten-ranked UK javelin thrower,Felix had just thrown over 70m in competition for the first time at the BUSA Champs(70m.99) but, after that substantial PB effort,sustained/aggravated an injury which has since been diagnosed as a stress fracture of the elbow. It appears that surgery is the likely outcome. (Update)Felix has, sadly, had to withdraw from the Olympic Trials, and all comps. in the short term.

We extend our sincere commiserations to both members, and Don, and their families, and look forward to better news shortly.

Don Webb is back home and was, thankfully, able to be present at the Don Turner-organised Surrey Under13 Inter County at Kingsmeadow on July 27th to present the Trophies to the winning counties(see www.surreyathletics.org.uk for full results).
