How the correspondent of 'The Times' regarded the crowd at the AAA Championships of 1919!!
Those who go to the Athletic Championships are a very workmanlike body - there is a big proportion of old competitors who love to meet and talk of the giants of the past and compare them with their present-day successors, generally to the disadvantage of the latter. It is,moreover,a very knowing crowd;it can reel off the best times and records of athletes in a way that makes the average male dizzy and completely overwhelms any unfortunate female listener. Athletics meetings, however, always attract a large number of women;perhaps it is the gay colours of the runners;perhaps it is their youth and splendid condition;whatever the reason they come in thousands and add brightness to the scene, even if their appreciation of the actual event is not always particularly intelligent.
