id821-Bruce Judd Surrey YA CC Relays Guildford October 4th 2008 Report

Written by SD

Susanne Dietrich's accession to the YA Cross Country managership blossomed at Stoke Park, with 22 youngsters in action over all 6 races - more than have attended over the last 5 years in toto. Out of the medals maybe…..but perhaps not next year!

The Club were particularly grateful for the on-the-day agreement with Robin Shaw, the Tiffins Boys Master I/C,for enabling both 'outfits'(Ugh! what an horrible word!) to field as fuller teams as possible in all the boys events.

Surrey County Young Athletes’ XC Relays in Stoke Park Guildford:

Last Saturday was the first time in years that K&P showed so many in the club colours at the Surrey County Young Athletes’ XC Relays in Stoke Park. Not only that, we had teams out in all age groups, with a particularly good contribution from our U13 girls - 7 runners and two complete teams! Yet we weren’t quite sure what to expect: some of our athletes had done XC running before, some quite successfully so. But many of our runners were 1st year’s in their respective age groups, and some even novices to XC running altogether. And we were well aware that we were up against the top Surrey runners and the top clubs specialised in distance running, so a bit of a daunting prospect.

How did we fare?

All of our athletes without any exception achieved decent split times for their respective laps and all worked incredibly hard to for their teams, leading to very respectable team results indeed. The highlights were 2 top-10 and 6 top-20 performances, which count for a possible selection into the Surrey XC squad. This is a highly successful result, and clearly a sign for K&P distance running being on the up. Well done everybody!

Below you will find the results for our athletes and teams. Don’t take the times too gravely, since the 1st-leg runners, but not the 2nd/ 3rd leg runners had the advantage of pacing themselves against others. In other words, 2nd/3rd leg runners might even have faster times in them.

Thanks for the support

For the club it was very nice to see that athletes from the main training group, Richard/Vanessa’s group and Ian’s group participated - this was wholesome club effort. A warm thank you to all the families who kindly offered transport and support on the day – without you, our success would not have been possible. Special thanks to R. Shaw, K&P member and Tiffin XC manager, who kindly agreed that all K&P athletes who normally run for their school, would on this occasion support the club team.

How do we move on from this?

All runners are entitled to participate in the Surrey League races. Our U13 and U15 runners, and also our U11 runners are warmly invited to participate in the Epsom Downs League Races which, like the Surrey League races and the Surrey champs contribute towards county selection (more info is in the attached newsletter). If we keep the momentum going – we could win the Downs League. Are you up for it?

Again, well done to everybody, and I hope to see you in training (remember: extra XC training Sundays 2 pm Richmond Park) and at the next races.
