TM Debbie Raymond's report.
Surrey Ladies Cross Country League
Lightwater Park 8th November
As we motored down the M3, the headlights were on full as the rain poured down. It made for a depressing start to the day. We wondered whether we had enough waterproof clothes and change of clothes, socks especially, with us and should we have brought wellies?
Our day just got better, when soon after we got out of the car, the rain stopped and blue sky could be seen. Having met up with all 8 athletes we were impatient for the races to begin. The 302 ladies lined up as the sun shone and they were off to do 1 small lap and 2 large of Lightwater Country Park totalling 6.44k.
First home was Rachel 9th in 25.12 followed by U20 lady Maddy 36th in 26.56 and Jo B 45th on her debut for the club in 27.15. Jenny was 67th in 28.28 and Nicky A 83rd completed the ‘A’ team in 29.20 with Susanne very close at her heels in 86th (29.29). Avelline 106th in 30.41 and Jo G 142nd in 33.52 closing the ‘B’ team on their first run of the season. We only had one fall in the mud and at least that was not face in like other athletes!!
We came 10th on the day, leaving us 12th overall ahead of Dorking & Mole Valley, Striders of Croydon and Sutton Runners. How great is that!
The next race was the u17/u15 combined race. Still in sunshine, Molly stormed in at 3rd for the u17s followed by Fran in a respectable 16th. Gaby raced fantastically well to finish 6th out of 31 in the u15 race. As the u13s got ready to leave in the 3rd race the temperature was rising and a large number of spectators had gathered around to cheer on this youngest group. For us we had 2 athletes. Layla charged home in 11th and Mae followed a short while later in 28th.
Team wise, these younger age groups cannot score particularly well as they really need 4 athletes in each age group. As individuals they all showed how strong they are and I am sure they would be with me in asking where their fellow athletes are?
The sun continued to shine as we left, although the dark clouds surrounded us as we drove back along the M3 towards home, where a rainbow could be seen in the distance.
We look forward to race 3 at Farthing Downs, Coulsdon on 10 January 2009.
