SURREY MEN’S LEAGUE MATCH no. 2: 8th NOV 2008: WEST END COMMON, ESHER
Sterling stuff, to sum the day up, and a team performance to match the turnout. It certainly gladdened the heart of this spectator to watch it!
Conditions on the A3 heading for the race were borderline biblical, and didn’t bode well for a comfortable time out on West End Common’s much loved twists and turns. Pleasurable not exactly, but thrills and spills aplenty as one after another runner through the whole field missed their footing, crashed to the ground and came home duly plastered.
We were lucky to welcome no less than three new members into the squad, one of whom, HCA Jud Hough (currently studying at UCL) was our first man in placing 7th, ahead of Mike Maranzano and Andy Arbour (12th and 16th). Matt Hyett and Michael Huntley slid in under a scoring 30 almost together, with leading veteran Ant Budarkiewicz ducking under the 50 mark.
Next in Ramon Benitez making his competitive debut for us with a very solid run indeed, followed a little further down the field by Peter Wilkins, Ray Allen (yes THE legendary Ray Allen returning to the K&P fold for a second time in a week!) and Steve Wright, just back after two years TEFL in Japan. Never underestimate the intimidation factor of a turnout of 17, where such a spread of K&P vests through the field underpins the scoring and creates an aura of upbeat confidence even before a step is taken. So, take a bow Graham Huntley, David Greenfield and Graeme Horstead ably bolstering the pack, as did our third new member Marcus Boettger – hope your next outing with us is a bit firmer underfoot, Marcus! Geoff Reed, Rupert Bole and supervet V65 David Barrington provided our ‘back row’ – and where would a rugby scrum be without one?!
So, the sum of all these parts was a 5th placing on the day, moving us up to 5th overall and only 12 points short of 4th. Considering that after the first match we were only one point away from relegation zone, no mean feat. Well done one and all, let’s see if we can duplicate the effort for our third match in January – or dare I hope even better it!
