Here is TM Gill Broderick's report.
U11s Sportshall Regional Festival
Burgess Hill – Saturday 11th January 2009
Thank you firstly, to the boys and girls who made this event happen by being able to compete for Kingston Kestrels (attached to Kingston & Poly AC) U11s Sportshall team and they are:
Boys: Eamon Broderick, Joe Lavender, Oliver Phelps, Nathan Whittaker, Jason Newell, Gabriel Finch, Alfie Clarke, Harry Robinson making up the K&P members; with Alex Parkinson and borrowed from Berkshire, Freeman Mulipola.
Girls: Gaby Hobday, Negeen Zarei, Claudia Joyce, Ella Norman, Jerene Shaw-Capton, Stephanie Mitchell, Siobhan Croall, Julia Logan, being the K&P athletes with Mairead Halliday and Jessica Chan joining us from a local primary school.
This event is for years 5 & 6 children, they are with children of their own age group and it was great to see them cheer each other on and just really getting on with each other and being supportive. The whole day was run with fantastic precision; nothing was delayed but that is also down to the fact that they only have one age group to consider.
Once the first event kicked off with the obstacle relays; the sound of the cheering and clapping increases two-fold. The field events start, then back to the relay races, then to the field, it was impossible to know where to look as the team members were kept very busy and with all of them being able to take part in extra non-scoring events too was a bonus.
While we didn’t have any individual winners as we were up against county selected teams (we were allocated a place as we could not attend the South London Festival happening next Saturday). However, not one team member was disgruntled by the fact that we were up against strong competition. They all tried their ABSOLUTE best by trying out new field events and skills for the team and to make the day eventful and fun. Furthermore, our team members have gained valuable experience for when they move to Sportshall!
Another mention and thanks has to go to Maurice for driving the bus and the parents who were able to make their children available at such short notice to bring them to the track or even wanting to drive to and support their child and the team at this special event. Thank you, also, to Simon for the cup of coffee!
