3rd Surrey Young Athletes’ Downs League Cross Country Match on Sunday 15th February

Well, why on earth does this race have to be in the half term break…?! Yes, it’s so inconvenient, and yes, we have discussed it all before, and no, no other date can be found in the busy calendar of XC racing… Still, the predicament of the team manager was obvious: three days before the event, and we did not have a team in any of the three age groups.

But then…

20 young athletes shook off the holiday feel and performed - ever so well!

After match two, our U11 team had slipped from 2nd into 3rd position, simply because on that day, we only had a depleted team. This Sunday, club members Josh Webb, Dominic Oldfield and Gaby Hobday ran for their school team. So the five-strong U11 K&P team looked a bit thin to prevent a further slide down the leader board. Yet Joe Lavender brought the team home in 4th place, setting a new PB with 11:53. He was followed by novices Gabriel Finch in 12th place and Nicholas Rilett in 23rd*. Jason Newell came 28th*, setting a new PB with 14:17, and Ella Norman, new to XC running altogether, finished 41st*. On the day, the team was 4th, indeed holding on to 3rd place overall. This was more than we could have hoped for – well done!

With nine runners, the U13’s obviously had a much stronger team. Ed Rumbold brought the team home in 4th place with a new PB of 13:59, closely followed by Jenny Miles (5th) and Danni Searle (7th), who are a very welcome reinforcement to the club. Minty Allen came in 9th, chased by Laura Cook (10th), Matthews Stevens (11th), Martin Purkiss (13th), Alex Bartle (14th) and Amy Gooch (16th). In the individual rankings, Ed is joint 2nd for the boys. In the girls’ rankings, Minty is in 1st place, with Laura (joint 2nd) closing in. Overall, the U13 team secured a clear win, leading Epsom & Ewell by solid 54 points and both Croydon and Sutton by 75 points. It looks very good for us winning the team trophy.

The U15 race was comprehensively won by Croydon’s Peter Chambers, 3rd in the Surrey champs this season, followed by three more seasoned Surrey XC lads. Yet Gaby Miles was not far behind, finishing 6th (5th if we disregard the non-scoring U17) and pushing her PB to 13:02. Gaby was followed by Max Williams, Adam Curran, Nikolaj Schubert, Helen Davies and Rachel Cook, who together secured the team a narrow 1-point win over Croydon. Overall, the team remained in the lead, 28 points ahead of Croydon and 35 points ahead of Epsom & Ewell. Gaby leads the race for the girl’s individual trophy, and Max is third amongst the boys. Well done everybody!

Again, a very big thank you to all who came out and performed so brilliantly on the day. In particular the girls’ power was superb. The prospect of ending the season with the best result we had for years is very good indeed. So folks, please pencil Sunday 8th March into your calendars: this will be the last Downs League match. And we want to get at least bronze in the U11 age group, and win the U13s and U15s.

Yes we can.

Best regards from a happy TM

Susanne

PS.

Many of you living or going to school in the Borough of Kingston will have registered for the London Minimarathon trials in Bushy Park on Saturday 28th February. For those (U13/15/17) who didn’t and fancy a bit more cross country running: the last of the Surrey League XC matches had been rescheduled for the day. If you want to participate, get in touch.
