On an evening blessed by sunshine but cursed by strong headwinds, 9 K&P veteran men contested the first Veterans League match of 2009 at Croydon Arena, with the added assistance of David Barrington who organised our officiating duties on the Mens’ Long Jump. Rob Lowe and Frank Schubert took care of the M35-49 Throws and Jumps respectively, and Maurice Joyce did the honours in the M60 Field Events, the Shot and the High Jump.

In the M50s, Graham Huntley and Walton’s Jack Rutherford covered both Field events between themselves and also did the 1500m and 400m respectively for us. In the sprints Pat Logan returned to competition in the 100m but although he won the M35-49 A String comfortably, the battering headwind slowed him to 12.5. Mike May 2nd in the B string with 14.1 and Chuck Isetts (M65) running in the M50 race, coming third were similarly afflicted as to times. In the M35-49 A String, Mike ran a cautious 400m, because of the wind conditions, managing to come 3rd. James Harvey (M35), of Walton front ran the M35-49 1500m for us, winning in style on his debut. Sadly a combination of injury, illness and work commitments deprived us of four or five potential other team members in the week leading up to the match, so we had no B String 400m, no B String 1500m, no M60 1500m and no walkers at all. At the end of the match, with the sun going down, and the chill coming on, Messrs May, Logan, Isetts and Rutherford came together in the 4 by 100m relay to claim second spot.

Results at Croydon tend to arrive slowly, so the above has to be a bit sketchy about positions and distances and times.

SVL (Southern Veterans League) - women's report by Nicky Atkins

I have finally received the results of the Southern Women’s Veterans League held at Croydon Arena on Monday 18th May.

Although we were an incomplete team doing multi-events we managed to secure several first places. Our top scorer for this meeting was Camilla Thrush who achieved 1st first place in both of her events, the hammer and discus. Also out into the field was Debbie Singleton who also achieved 1st place in the discus, debuting in her new age group. Meanwhile out on the track we had a 1st place for yours truly both in the 2k walk, B string, and 1500m, B string, both of which were a complete surprise.

Unfortunately we were missing our top O50 sprinter due to injury who would have achieved maximum points in the 100m. We were also missing Nicki Murphy due to work commitments and Nicki would have undoubtedly achieved more points than I did both in the 100 and 400m. With the presence of both these athletes we would have been potential high scorers in the 4 x 100m relay.

As I said before everyone worked their socks and worked as a team earning every valuable point which I thank you all for.

At the end of the meeting we came 3rd out of 6th teams behind Epsom and Ewell and Croydon Harriers.

Our next meeting will be at Ewell Court , Athletic track, Poole Road , Ewell, hosted by Epsom and Ewell Harriers, on Monday 8th June. First event starts at 6.30pm
