Veterans League Match – Ewell 8th June 2009
Mens’ Team by MM
Amended for results received.
After coming 4th in our first match at Croydon, (behind Croydon , Epsom and Striders), the team sheet for Ewell looked distinctly more promising a week before the match, but a number of late withdrawals due to sudden work commitments of event specialists meant that although we managed to cover everything except the M50 3000m on the night due to point gathering by remaining members of the team, we did not achieve what we could have done, coming a comfortable 3rd, but not very close to 1st and 2nd. We are now third overall leading Striders on match points.
Maurice Joyce (M60) as well as coming 2nd in the Pole Vault also did the M50 200m. Graham Huntley, after coming 3rd in the M50 Javelin had to double up on the M50 triple jump, although he got very good points from the latter. Jack Rutherford after taking part in the 800m also did the M50 shot for us, coming 3rd and the 4x 400 relay. James Harvey after winning the 3000m did the relay as well, as did David Bell, who had done the M35-49 800m, and Mike May who had come 3rd in the M35-49 B String 200m, and Geoff Reed who had come to help with the officiating ran the M35-49 800 B String, followed immediately by the M35-49 B String in the 3000 (he was 4th in the 800m but 3rd in the 3000m) . Robin Shaw doubled up on Pole Vault and Triple Jump (he had been planning to non-score in the latter), and Rob Lowe did the Shot, and helped out with the Javelin officiating.
On the positive side we had wins for Pat Logan (24.6 in the M35 A String 200m), Chuck Isetts in the M60 200m, Les Hatton in the M60 Javelin and Geoff van Klaveren in the M35-49 Javelin. Thanks to David Barrington, Cashel Riordan, Geoff Reed, and Geoff van K and Les for meeting our commitment to officiate the Javelin for both the men and the women.
Next match at Kingston on 22nd June 100m 400m 1500m 5000m medley relay on the track, pole vault, discus, long jump and hammer in the field.
Women's Team by NA.
Our 2nd meeting was held on Monday 8th June at Ewell Court on a rather chilly but calm evening. We had one athlete unable to compete because of illness but had the welcome return of Joan Trimble back from injury and Nicki Murphy, although competing with personal difficulties. We also welcomed by our newest recruit, Sue Watson, who debuted in her first ever track race, 3000m, over 50 and earned seven points in her achievement. Even better,Sue had fun and is going to compete at our next meeting on 22nd June.
Thanks to everyone's commitment and hard work we had an abundant of first and second place achievements, especially in the field events where we had complete control. A 4x400m relay team boosted our points which resulted in us winning the match, just two points in front of Epsom and Ewell! Our overall place is still 3rd but with only three points behind Croydon Harriers.
Competing team members for this meeting were Susanne Dietrich, Nicki Murphy, Joan Trimble, Rachel Disley, Sue Watson,Debbie Singleton, Camilla Thrush and Nicky Atkins.
