ROSENHEIM LEAGUE FINAL, 12th AUGUST 2009, KINGSMEADOW

On Wednesday evening at Kingsmeadow, a compact team of 11 answered the call of duty to face the might of Herne Hill and Belgrave et al, in defence of the Rosenheim Final shield. In a dogged battle, the injury-hit squad out-performed Belgrave (the British League Division 1 team!), but sadly was beaten into second place by a determined Herne Hill (who are challenging for promotion in our division of the BAL). The final scores – HHH 87, K&P 71, Bels 65, Croydon 64 – don’t do justice to the effort expended by the troops on a miserably rain-swept evening, although it was nice to demolish our Western Division rivals, St Mary’s Richmond (a meagre 33.5 points), who somehow narrowly pipped us to win the League.

The men’s field captain, Gareth Cook, led from the front as normal (despite nursing a sore neck) and opened the field proceedings with an impressive 51.61m hammer for 2nd place, followed later in the evening by a 3rd place in the discus with 36.81m. The Team Manager is indebted to him for braving the conditions ahead of next weekend’s British League, and believes these performances bode well for the relegation battle to come!

On the track, Richard Holt came a solid 3rd in the first event of the evening – the 400m Hurdles – although he was less than impressed with his time. He was followed shortly afterwards by a sniffly Craig Price in the 800, who, although nursing a cold, ran a tactically astute race to finish 3rd in 1:59.6. To judge by this performance, he is likely to have a good race in a week and a half.

Not to be outdone by his coach (Richard), and training partner (Craig), Chris Hall was the TMs saviour and individual work-horse for the evening. A decent run in the 100m (4th – 11.5), was followed by a gentle LJ (6.37m – 4th), and a 22.7 for the 200m (3rd). He later combined with Draco Mkpa, Jason-Louis Bernard and Andre Nembhard – who ran a powerful, determined lead-off leg – to come a satisfying 2nd in the 4x200 relay (1:31.9, behind a swift 1:30.0 from HHH).

Valuable points were garnered elsewhere in the field and on the track, with Bilen Ahmet showing good form in the PV (3rd – 3.40m – and a rare ‘victory’ over a HHH athlete on the night), Adam Bellis continuing his return to fitness with 5th place in the 400m (51.8), and U17 George Corcoran running a gutsy 1500m to hold off a Belgrave athlete who had tracked him for most of the race (4th – 4:22.3).

The highlight of the evening, however, has to be Tom Beedell’s victory in the 3000m (8:55.4). Our only win of the evening, and it was a pleasure to see a K&P vest leading a field of good quality middle distance runners around Kingsmeadow, and there were numerous shouts of “well done” from the old guard in recognition of this feat. Bravo!

There were also many Kingston and Poly non-scorers, although at present the TM has no n/s results to hand. Likely best non-scoring performances were by (U20) Richard Smeaton and James Moroney who fought it out all the way to the line in the 400m (Richard pipping James: both 51.4) – results should be on Pof10 or TOPS shortly….. and on this website now(Ed).

Thanks to everyone who turned out in the Final, and to all those who competed in the League throughout the season. Bring on 2010!
