School years and "Under" age groups. We show your school year because it is familiar. Athletics itself uses "Under" groups (Under 12, or U12, means you are still 11 or younger on 31 August), and you will hear them at every meeting, so it helps to learn both.
| School years | Athletics age group |
|---|---|
| Years 3–4 | U10 (Under 10) |
| Years 5–6 | U12 (Under 12) |
| Years 7–8 | U14 (Under 14) |
| Years 9–10 | U16 (Under 16) |
| Years 11–12 | U18 (Under 18) |
This is a guide for the current school year: the exact group depends on your date of birth, and winter competitions count your age on 31 August the following summer. Work out your age group.

Registered & insured
England Athletics registration
All athletes must be registered with England Athletics through KACPH. It gives you insurance cover for training and competition, eligibility for licensed competitions, and your performances recorded for rankings and results. It includes personal accident insurance when you train with the club and compete in licensed events.
- England Athletics emails you a payment link, using the details you gave us. It includes the England Athletics registration fee where it applies.
- Once you have paid you are registered, and England Athletics asks you to complete your profile and confirm your details.
Good to know: the registration fee is part of your annual membership. You register once a year and renew on 1 April. You'll be told when it's time. Make sure we have your correct email address, date of birth and contact details. More on England Athletics ↗ (opens in a new tab)
Questions
Do I need to be good to join?
No. A passion for track and field athletics is the only qualification you need. We have opportunities for beginners, recreational athletes and experienced competitors.
Do I need spikes?
For track events spikes are recommended from U14 upwards, but they're not essential to start with. Check with your coach for the right type for you.
What if I miss training?
Let your coach know if you can't attend. Consistency helps you improve, but we understand things come up.
Can I try different events?
Absolutely. We encourage all athletes to try a range of events, and you don't have to specialise straight away. Speak to your coach if you'd like to explore something new.
How do I move up a training group?
Groups are based on age, ability and experience. Your coach will advise when you're ready to move up. Focus on effort and enjoyment and the rest will follow.
What if I'm injured or ill?
Let your coach know and rest until you're fully recovered. If you're unsure when to return, speak to your coach or a health professional.
Is athletics safe?
Yes. We follow England Athletics safeguarding guidance and have DBS-checked coaches and volunteers. See our welfare page.
Who runs the track?
The track is owned by Kingston Council and operated by a private company. For general track-usage requests, contact the operator. For anything athletics-club related, contact us.
I already belong to another club.
You can join as a Higher Competition Athlete (for the National Athletics League) or on a Second Claim membership. See the options above.
